Microsoft to invest in Indian budget hotel start-up Oyo

Microsoft is in advanced talks to invest in Indian budget hotel chain Oyo, a source familiar confirmed. The size of the deal is not known, but the SoftBank-backed hotel start-up is valued at about $9 billion. The news was first reported by TechCrunch, which said the proposed deal may involve Oyo shifting to use Microsoft’s cloud services. Microsoft was also not immediately available for comments. Oyo raised $660 million in debt funding this month from global institutional investors; to use the capital for paring dues and other business investments. Senior executives at the company have said the start-up is working on a potential public listing but did not provide a timeline for the IPO; — a number of highly-valued Indian technology start-ups are in the middle of entering the public markets, and food delivery firm Zomato saw a stellar stock market debut last week.

Tesla Megapack caught fire at Victorian Big Battery site in Australia

A fire occurred within a Tesla Megapack at one of the largest batteries in the world in Australia’s Victoria state around 10:15 a.m. local time on Friday. The cause of the fire at the Victorian Big Battery site in Geelong; Victoria is not yet known. Paris-based renewable energy giant Neoen worked with Tesla and AusNet Services to develop the grid-scale project with the aim of helping the state of Victoria meet a renewable energy target of 50% by 2030. According to recent updates shared by Neoen Australia on Twitter; the battery was only recently registered with the Australian Energy Market Operator. The fire happened during testing. According to a spokesperson for AEMO, the electricity market operator; the site has been safely isolated from the electricity grid and has not impacted electricity supply in the area. Gigantic batteries like those offered by Tesla, ABB and newcomers like Northvolt can help grid operators move extra capacity between states and ensure that power from intermittent; renewable energy sources including solar and wind can be stored and used when needed.
